Confined Space Authorised Entrant and Standby Person Training
Introduction
The Authorised Entrant and Standby Person (AESP) program is a high-impact safety training designed to equip personnel with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to operate safely in confined space environments. Recognizing that confined spaces are high-risk areas where simple errors can lead to fatalities, the program focuses on a combination of theoretical understanding and hands-on application to ensure all participants are competent and accountable. The curriculum covers critical areas such as Malaysian legal requirements, including the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 and the Industry Code of Practice for Safe Working in a Confined Space, as well as the identification of atmospheric, physical, and mechanical hazards. Participants undergo rigorous training in procedural discipline, learning to execute pre-entry checks, master the permit-to-work system, and operate safety equipment like gas detectors and retrieval systems. A significant portion of the course is dedicated to clarifying the distinct and critical roles of the Entrant, who performs the work, and the Standby Person, who provides active supervision and manages communication protocols from outside the space. By integrating realistic practical simulations and emergency response workshops, the program ensures that workers can respond effectively under pressure and prevent secondary casualties during industrial incidents.
